CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS

In partnership with HOMEF, capacity building workshops were hosted for the Gelegele community, Edo state; Okoro Utip community in Ibeno LGA and Opukalama community in Ikot Abasi LGA, Akwa Ibom state. Workshops explored critical socio-ecological challenges facing the communities and built their capacity to advocate for climate and environmental resilience through non-violent actions. A toolkit was developed to serve as a guide for community advocacy for environmental justice.

A virtual roundtable, in collaboration with the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), improved public understanding of gender-specific dimensions of corruption, amplified the voices of women in efforts to combat corruption and disseminated effective approaches to improve the participation and protection of women in governance and accountability.

Safeguarding and Protecting the Rights of Children Against SGBV

In collaboration with Partners West Africa, Nigeria, the Foundation organized a webinar in Kano State to discuss the rights of the Almajiri child, analyze the Almajiri system of education, identify examples of transformative change processes of the system and discuss safeguarding policies as a tool to protect Almajiri children.

Screening of Silent Tears, a Film By Ishaya Bako

In collaboration with Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), the Foundation hosted the screening of Silent Tears, a film by Ishaya Bako. The Film explores society’s indifference to gender violence and questions the motives of an armed, multiagency task force whose activities methodically victimize women. The documentary features moving stories of those who dare to challenge this apathy. The occasion was graced by her H.E, Mrs. Oludolapo Osinbajo who served as the Special Guest of Honour.Special remarks was offered by H.E. Ketil Karisen, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS.

FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA’S CHANGING CLIMATE: THE ECONOMICS AND POLITICS OF LAND CONFLICT

The grasslands of Nigeria can barely support 40% of Nigerian livestock. Loss of pasture and water resources have forced pastoralist cattle herders – predominantly from the north – southwards to graze their 30 million heads of cattle. This migration has intensified competition with crop farmers for dwindling land and water resources. The dynamics of these tensions have grown in complexity, with ethnicity and religion defining and shaping the patterns and trends of the conflicts in relation to access to and control of land. Governmental policy gaps and the resistance to change continue to polarize land-related issues. The public policy forum addressed and explored effective solutions to the compounding effects of climate change on food security and land conflict in Nigeria.

SWALLOW: FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA’S CHANGING CLIMATE

Swallow explores the growing food security challenge in Nigeria, driven in part by climate change, inadequate infrastructure, and traditional agricultural practices. The documentary examines these challenges, shares stories of resilience, and highlights opportunities and solutions for building a more food-secure future. First released in 2018, Swallow was produced with support from the European Union and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA). The documentary has been screened at the European Parliament in Brussels, the Embassy of Nigeria in Brussels, and Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO) events, where it helped stimulate dialogue on climate change, agriculture, and food security.

DESERTIFICATION AND DEFORESTATION

The Foundation organized and hosted a public policy forum on desertification and deforestation on October 25, 2016. The forum created a platform for citizens to engage with the international community, academia, policy makers and senior government officials on the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change. Panel discussions on desertification and deforestation featured decision makers in relevant government institutions. Key issues discussed: Impact of desertification on land conflict in Nigeria Impact of the proposed Cross River State superhighway through Nigeria’s endangered rain forest. Attendees valued the opportunity to engage with policymakers about the impacts of climate and environmental degradation on food security in Nigeria.

NOWHERE TO RUN: NIGERIA’S CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS

Nowhere to Run documents the human impact of climate change and environmental degradation in Nigeria, using powerful storytelling to drive public dialogue and policy engagement. The award-winning documentary reaches audiences across 15 locations in Nigeria and internationally, including the African Film Festival in Dallas, Washington, DC, Linden, New Jersey, and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. It also features at the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and leading institutions including USIP, IRI, NDI, Johns Hopkins SAIS, and American University, with support from the European Union, OSIWA, the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, the Ford Foundation, and the MacArthur Foundation.
