From Corruption to Sustainability: Energising Nigeria’s Future

A roundtable exploring the intersectionality between renewable energy, accountability, and sustainability. Organised in partnership with the Health of Mother Earth Foundation and the SOAS Anti-Corruption Evidence Consortium, the event brought together the diplomatic community, energy experts, researchers, the media, and civil society organisations.

SHEHU MUSA YAR’ADUA FOUNDATION AT COP 28 IN DUBAI

With support from the Ford Foundation and in collaboration with the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), the Foundation championed the cause of impacted communities in Nigeria’s energy transition. Aligned with the thematic agenda of Energy and Industry, Just Transition, and Indigenous Peoples, the December 5, 2023 event at the Nigeria Pavilion advocated for community engagement in shaping energy policies, sharing insights from Nigeria’s sustainable energy journey, and emphasizing Africa’s voice in climate negotiations. The thought-provoking short film, ‘After Oil, We Flourish,’ set the tone for the plenary session. The discourse featured perspectives from notable figures including Nnimmo Bassey and Chief Mrs. Ebiyemi Omatseye, the Olujimi of Warri. Participating remotely, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri highlighted the environmental damage resulting from oil activities in the region and emphasized the significance of adopting an inclusive approach that extends beyond cleaner energy adoption to encompass environmental restoration and community development.

The Yar’Adua Foundation, in partnership with the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) and the School of African Studies Anti-Corruption Evidence Consortium (SOAS-ACE), hosted a roundtable meeting with support from the Ford Foundation. The roundtable explored the intersectionality between renewable energy, accountability, and sustainability. The event brought together the diplomatic community, energy experts, researchers, the media, and civil society organizations. The roundtable was attended by over 50 participants including Eyo O. ENERGY TRANSITION CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR CSOs AND MEDIA

In collaboration with Natural Resource Governance Institute, the Foundation hosted a 2-day Energy Transition training for Civil Society and Media in Lagos. The workshop equipped participants with relevant and critical information and data on the progress of the global energy transition. Training also served as an opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s strategy to harness opportunities and minimize risks presented by the transition. The training established a community of well-informed accountability actors committed to sustaining a dialogue on energy transition including addressing its impact on Nigeria’s socioeconomic and energy sectors.

20th Anniversary of the Commissioning of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre

 A high-profile conference explored environmental and economic implications of Nigeria’s post-oil future and how we can manage the transition in a just and sustainable manner by galvanizing impoverished extractive communities to demand environmental justice. The public policy forum was addressed by Mrs. Cecile Tassin-Pelzer, Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Uche Orji, Managing Director, Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority and Dr. Chichi AniagoluOkoye, Regional Director of Ford Foundation, West Africa.
