Chapter 09 of 17
Tafidan Katsina - Turbaning
On April 18, 1987, Shehu Yar’Adua was turbaned Tafidan Katsina, a prestigious traditional title inherited from his father and bestowed upon individuals renowned for honesty, integrity, and accountability. Historically, the Tafida was responsible for overseeing district finances and monitoring public projects to ensure they met required standards. The title, derived from the Hausa phrase “Tafi da aikinka” (“execute your work honourably”), reflects a commitment to diligent and ethical service. Shehu’s father, Mallam Musa Yar’Adua, held the title from 1953 until his elevation as Mutawallin Katsina in 1986. Shehu’s turbaning was celebrated as a significant national event, reflecting his standing and contributions to public life.
