Chapter 12 of 17
Building Bridges - Politics
Shehu Yar’Adua entered politics in response to Nigeria’s recurring military coups and democratic disruptions. Shehu Shagari's civilian government had been toppled in a coup at dawn on December 31, 1983. Head of State Major-General Muhammadu Buhari was then ousted in another military coup less than two years later by his Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Ibrahim Babangida. He was ready to guide the political class through the familiar challenges and tactics posed by his former colleagues in uniform. Being a gifted grassroots politician, he rejected ethnic, religious, and regional divisions, instead promoting inclusive national politics. Through movements such as the People’s Front, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and People’s Democratic Movement, he reshaped the political landscape. He championed a new national purpose based on unity, accountability, and responsible leadership. He gained nationwide support during the SDP primaries and emerged as a leading presidential contender. However, his political career was abruptly halted when the election was annulled, and he was banned from further participation.
