Institutionalizing Safeguarding Practices in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions
On September 12, 2024, with support from the Ford Foundation, the Foundation hosted a roundtable, Scaling Impact: Institutionalizing Safeguarding Practices in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions.
The roundtable convened students, key stakeholders from universities, polytechnics, technical institutions, advocacy groups, and government agencies to discuss the successes, challenges, and next steps in addressing sexual harassment and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Nigerian tertiary institutions. We evaluated the successes and challenges of the Gender Justice Project, discussed the extension of safeguarding policies beyond pilot universities, and examined how institutions can build long-term safeguarding mechanisms for students and vulnerable adults.
The roundtable was a critical step towards ensuring that safeguarding policies are institutionalized across Nigeria's tertiary institutions.
