Chapter 16 of 17

Realizing Democracy

The death of Shehu Musa Yar'Adua marked the loss of a distinguished statesman whose political legacy endured. The structures and networks he established laid the foundation for the People's Democratic Party's victory in 1999, while many leaders in other parties had roots in the PF, SDP, and PDM. The inauguration of President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice President Atiku Abubakar symbolised the restoration of democracy that Yar'Adua championed. In 2007, his younger brother, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, became President, promoting a Seven-Point Agenda focused on national development and pledging leadership founded on honesty, transparency, accountability, and selfless service.
