Membership Policy

Membership

Membership shall be available under the following categories:

  • Individual Membership – N50,000
  • Family Membership (Covers 5 members only) – N100,000
  • Corporate Membership (Covers 10 staff members only) – N200,000

Applicants shall:

  • Complete the prescribed membership application form
  • Present a valid means of identification, i.e., National Identification Number (NIN), International Passport, Driver’s Licence, or Voter’s Card
  • Provide two passport photographs
  • Pay membership fee
  • Institutional identification (where applicable)
  • Letter of introduction (Corporate membership)
  • Agree to abide by the library’s rules and regulations

Membership Validity

Membership shall remain valid for one (1) year from the date of registration and shall be renewable annually upon payment of the applicable renewal fee.

Membership Card

Each registered member shall receive a Library Membership Card. The membership card:

  • Remains the property of the library.
  • Must be presented whenever borrowing materials.
  • Shall not be transferred to another person.
  • Must be reported immediately if lost.
  • Replacement cards shall attract a replacement fee of five thousand naira only (N5,000)

Borrowing Privileges

A security deposit of N10,000 will be required to access the library loan services. The library reserves the right to determine:

  • Number of items that may be borrowed.
  • Loan duration.
  • Categories of materials available for borrowing.

Certain materials shall be restricted to in-library use only.

These include:

  • Rare books
  • Reference materials
  • Newspapers
  • Archival collections
  • Special collections
  • Manuscripts

Loan Period

Unless otherwise specified:

Loan periods may be renewed if no reservations exist.

Reservations

  • Members may reserve materials currently on loan.
  • Reserved materials shall be held for a specified period after notification.

Member Responsibilities

Members shall:

  • Handle library materials with care.
  • Return borrowed materials on time.
  • Protect membership credentials.
  • Observe library rules.
  • Maintain silence within reading areas.
  • Respect staff and other users.
  • Use library facilities responsibly.

Overdue Materials

  • Borrowed materials not returned by the due date shall attract an overdue fine of (N5,000 per week).
  • The library reserves the right to suspend borrowing privileges until outstanding obligations have been fulfilled.

Lost or Damaged Materials

  • Members shall be responsible for replacing or paying the full replacement cost of any lost or damaged material.
  • Where replacement copies are unavailable, the library shall determine an appropriate replacement value.

Suspension of Membership

Membership may be suspended or withdrawn for:

  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Vandalism
  • Misuse of library resources
  • Persistent overdue materials
  • Disruptive behaviour
  • Falsification of membership information

Library Conduct

Members shall:

  • Maintain a quiet environment.
  • Switch mobile devices to silent mode.
  • Refrain from eating or drinking in designated reading areas.
  • Comply with security procedures.
  • Follow staff instructions.

Privacy

The library shall maintain the confidentiality of members’ personal information in accordance with applicable data protection laws and the Centre’s Privacy Policy.

Membership Renewal

Membership shall be renewed annually. Renewal may be denied where:

  • Outstanding fines exist.
  • Borrowed materials remain unreturned.
  • Membership conditions have been violated.

Termination

Membership may be terminated upon:

  • Written request by the member.
  • Breach of Library policies.
  • Fraudulent registration.
  • Conduct prejudicial to the interests of the library.

Amendments

The Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre Library reserves the right to amend this policy from time to time. Members shall be notified of significant changes.
